Olimpíadas do desânimo

Quatro dias, nenhuma medalha. E mais, poucas esperanças de que esse quadro mude. O esporte olímpico argentino atualmente é um desastre, desproporcional à abundante cobertura televisiva vinda de Londres. A cada momento em que ligo a TV, é uma nova derrota: “fulano de tal caiu no judô”, “o hóquei perdeu outra vez”, “cordobesa decepciona na natação”, “sem chances na ginástica”, e por aí vai.

Mas não foi sempre assim. Durante o peronismo, nos anos 40, o esporte era altamente incentivado pelo governo e a Argentina era líder na América Latina. Segundo o colunista Ezequiel Fernandes Moores, do “La Nación”, o esporte olímpico argentino sempre foi aristocrata, e a primeira medalha de ouro veio no pólo, em 1924. Mesmo assim, havia um estímulo generalizado, através dos Torneios Evita. Depois da década de 1950, quando o futebol passou a concentrar mais atenção de todas as classes, as outras modalidades passaram a sofrer o abandono, e a Argentina foi superada, primeiro por Cuba, depois pelo Brasil. De 1952 a 2004, o país não ganhou nenhuma medalha de ouro. Curiosamente, naquele ano, em Atenas, quebrou o jejum em dose dupla, ganhando no futebol e no basquete.

Em Londres, as esperanças são ínfimas. “O futebol está fora, o basquete está velho e o hóquei feminino, em fase de renovação. Eram os esportes coletivos em que mais chances tínhamos”, diz Moores. As expectativas estão concentradas em pouquíssimos talentos, como o tenista Juan Martin del Potro, uma das duplas de remo e… ninguém mais. É claro que zebras acontecem, mas, por enquanto, parece improvável.

As TVs, porém, parecem não desistir, e acompanham os argentinos em todas as partes. É uma pena, porque os jogos como um todo são desprezados. Apenas nos flashes dos intervalos pode-se ver a façanha de Phelps, os gols do Brasil ou a espetacular performance dos chineses. OK, toda cobertura de olimpíada é bairrista, e a da TV brasileira não é diferente. O que desanima no caso argentino é que as chances de êxito são mínimas, mas mesmo assim há imagens, replays e comentários de tudo. Os jogos viram uma maratona arrastada e meio deprimente. Que falta faz um Messi!
