O militar também sofria câncer de próstata, para o qual também não recebia tratamentos. No dia 13, três dias após a queda, estava previsto que se apresentasse a depor num tribunal que o tem como réu por crimes contra a humanidade. Apesar de seu estado de saúde, não houve avaliação médica para saber se ele poderia mesmo ser transportado ao tribunal. Queixando-se muito, mas sem ser ouvido, Videla foi levado ao local. Poucos dias depois, foi encontrado morto em seu quarto.
