A manchete, meio jocosa e ao estilo da competitividade entre os dois países, esteve estampada toda a tarde no site de um dos grandes diários argentinos. Enquanto isso, TVs e sites reforçavam as chances de um argentino ocupar o lugar deixado por Bento 16. Assim como no Brasil, a escolha do novo papa também se manifesta de modo quase futebolístico, na linha “o próximo será nosso”.

O nome mais em evidência entre os “papáveis” argentinos é o do arcebispo jesuíta de Buenos Aires, Jorge Bergoglio, 76. Desde 1998 no posto, Bergoglio mantém uma posição atual de enfrentamento com a presidente Cristina Kirchner, assim como ocorria durante a gestão de seu antecessor e marido, Néstor (1960-2010). Conhecido por levar uma vida muito modesta, vivendo num pequeno apartamento, em vez de optar pela residência palacial de um arcebispo, Bergoglio vive sob a sombra da desconfiança de ter sido um colaborador do regime militar (1976-1983). O arcebispo já foi acusado por entidades de direitos humanos, entre outras coisas por supostamente ter conspirado pela prisão de dois padres jesuítas. Apesar de ter se iniciado próximo à teologia da libertação, trata-se de um religioso hoje muito conservador. Seus principais enfrentamentos com o casal Kirchner se deram por conta das políticas liberais destes com relação a homossexuais, entre outras coisas.

Menos conhecido, mas segundo alguns especialistas com mais chances do que Bergoglio, está o cardeal Leonardo Sandri, 69. Ex-porta-voz de João Paulo 2, foi o responsável por anunciar a morte deste, em 2 de abril de 2005. Sandri está desde os anos 70 longe da Argentina, tendo atuado junto ao poderoso cardeal Angelo Sodano, no Vaticano. Também foi representante papal na Venezuela, no México e em Madagascar. Hoje está em Roma, à frente das Igrejas Orientais.  Ontem, as listas de “papáveis” internacionais o apontavam com grande destaque.

Se há realmente chance para a escolha de um papa latino-americando, a Argentina espera com ansiedade, pois tem uma das populações mais católicas da América Latina, com cerca de 35 milhões de pessoas baseadas (a população é de 40 milhões).
