O escritor carioca Bernardo Carvalho lançou críticas à elite brasileira ao comentar o tamanho do mercado leitor do país, nesta noite, na Feira do Livro de Guadalajara, no México. O autor de “Mongólia” e “Nove Noites” disse que os ricos brasileiros eram ignorantes e que não podiam ser comparados com os ricos norte-americanos, que mandam seus filhos a Harvard e os estimulam a engajar-se em trabalhos beneficentes.

Carvalho opunha-se às colocações do compatriota Daniel Galera (“Mãos de Cavalo”), que avaliou o mercado brasileiro como “bom”. “Não consigo entender onde vão parar os livros. Publica-se muito no Brasil, mas quem lê é uma parte muito pequena da classe média. Os ricos não leem, os pobres não leem. Não é um país de leitores. Eu não sei pra quem se publica livros no Brasil”, disse Carvalho.

Os dois escritores participaram de uma das mesas da seção “Destinação Brasil”, dedicada à literatura brasileira. Também faziam parte do debate a carioca Tatiana Salem Levy e o paulistano Ferréz. O escritor do Capão Redondo disse que as editoras brasileiras escondem o tamanho de seus encalhes. “Você pode conhecer a sala de massagens da sua editora, nunca vai conhecer o estoque, eles não mostram.”

Mostrando pouco conhecimento da obra dos brasileiros, o moderador Benito Taibo fez apenas perguntas genéricas sobre o ofício de escritor e o mercado. Carvalho irritou-se com o nível baixo da discussão. À pergunta: “A literatura pode ser uma tábua de salvação?”, respondeu que se incomodava muito com a função edificante com a qual se concebe a literatura nos dias de hoje. “Quando comecei não era assim, a literatura era algo que incomodava, que provocava, não existia para salvar ninguém. Não sou padre, não quero ser padre, e a literatura não é uma igreja”.

Galera reclamou da imprensa cultural brasileira e da ausência de boa crítica literária nos jornais. “Existe só a notícia do lançamento de um livro, depois quem sabe uma resenha acadêmica e engessada. A boa resenha para ajudar o leitor médio, como existe na imprensa norte-americana, não existe no Brasil e eu sinto falta”, declarou o gaúcho.

Também foi abordada a dificuldade de trânsito de obras entre países latino-americanos. Os brasileiros declararam não conhecer, de um modo geral, os novos escritores mexicanos. O moderador Taibo reforçou que a culpa é de editores espanhóis que compram direitos de obras e depois decidem onde vão lançar. Carvalho contou que teve uma experiência assim com um editor espanhol, e que seu livro nunca saiu, porque ele alegara que “literatura brasileira não interessa”.

Ferréz, que está sendo publicado agora na Argentina e no México, elogiou o trabalho de editoras independentes que fazem um trabalho artesanal e específico, e se mostram interessadas pela produção contemporânea. Seu “Manual Prático do Ódio” está saindo por uma editora pequena de Oaxaca.

A propósito do tamanho da feira e da quantidade de títulos publicados para o mercado hispano-americano, Carvalho se mostrou surpreso: “Eu não conheço nada! E olha que me considero um bom leitor”.
