Torre e Fenoglio compararam as impressões digitais que Gardel deixou em 1923 no consulado uruguaio em Buenos Aires, em 1923, quando foi renovar seu passaporte, com fichas criminais da época. A tese de que Gardel pudesse ter antecedentes criminais não é nova. É sabido, por exemplo, que, em 1922, a seu pedido, o então presidente da Argentina, Marcelo T. de Alvear, tinha ordenado que a polícia destruísse documentos com antecedentes penais do cantor.
