Na trilha de Tina Modotti

A fotógrafa italiana Assunta Adelaide Luigia Modotti (1896-1942) não viveu muito. Mas, em 45 anos, envolveu-se em tantas aventuras e tirou tantas fotos importantes que dá a ideia de que resumiu a essência do que foi a primeira metade do século 20.

Parte dessas imagens podem ser vistas agora no coração de Buenos Aires, no Centro Cultural Borges, em plena região ultraturística da cidade. A exposição “Tina Modotti: Fotógrafa y Revolucionária” reúne 100 fotos, essencialmente do seu período mexicano, através das quais se pode perceber a sensibilidade da artista para temas sociais e para a beleza do gesto humano.

Modotti deixou a Italia ainda adolescente, com a família, rumo aos EUA, onde começou cedo a trabalhar como atriz. Nos anos 20, migrou para o México, ficando amiga do ciclo dos muralistas, composto por Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, além de Frida Kahlo e outros artistas. Ali, compartilhou também um aprendizado e uma parceria com o fotógrafo norte-americano Edward Weston, sua principal referência.

O México lhe causou uma impressão profunda, e ela buscou retratar o período pós-revolucionário através dos traços e costumes da população mais simples. Retratou camponeses e trabalhadores com um olhar modernista e revolucionário, nunca passivo.

Mais do que isso, Modotti se sensibilizou com os rumos do país e entrou para o partido comunista, passando a militar. Acabou presa e expulsa, acusada de fazer parte de uma trama para assassinar o presidente.

Quando voltou a Europa, passou por alguns países até instalar-se na Espanha pré-Guerra Civil. Com o pseudônimo de Maria, entrou para as Brigadas Internacionais e se engajou na luta pela República.

Quando o conflito terminou, conseguiu um perdão do governo mexicano e retornou ao país que tanto amava, para morrer de uma forma súbita e surpreendente, dentro de um táxi, vítima de um ataque cardíaco.

A 70 anos de sua morte, a exposição portenha é uma bela homenagem a essas imagens que captaram um momento de transformação no México e de fervilhante movimentação de ideias e desejos revolucionários. Além das fotos, também será exibido um documentário, “Tina in México” (2002), da canadense Brenda Longfellow. Aqui, um trechinho:
