Era uma manhã fria do outono mexicano de 2009. Em meio a agitada Feira do Livro de Guadalajara, o escritor Carlos Fuentes me recebeu para um papo e um café da manhã num hotel da cidade.

Alto, elegante, com um lenço no pescoço, Fuentes mostrava incrível vigor físico, aos 81 anos e logo cedo pela manhã. “Costumo viajar muito a festivais, mas só se posso garantir algumas horas todos os dias para escrever”, comentou. Naquele dia, tinha pulado da cama às 6h, trabalhado até às 9h, e estava ali pronto para o compromisso com a Folha.

O papo estendeu-se por horas, começando pelo romance que ele lançava ali, “Adán en Edén”, e abrangendo também o bicentenário das independências latino-americanas, que seriam celebradas no ano seguinte. O escritor tinha em Machado de Assis uma referência importante, ao lado do espanhol Miguel de Cervantes. Na ocasião, Fuentes se lamentava por ver seu país em má situação, pela economia e pela narcoviolência, e fez vários elogios ao modo como o Brasil vinha se destacando no cenário internacional.

No começo deste mês, Fuentes passou pela Feira do Livro de Buenos Aires, e deu diversas entrevistas e uma palestra que foi acompanhada por uma plateia lotada. Já não mostrava o vigor de um par de anos atrás, mas não se recusou a estar em nenhum compromisso.

Entre outras coisas, rendeu homenagens à Argentina, país em que viveu alguns anos com os pais, diplomatas. “Me sinto contente de estar de volta a Buenos Aires, cidade da minha juventude, dos meus amores e de minha vida.” Agora vemos que essa, mesmo que ele não soubesse, era uma despedida.

Fuentes morreu hoje, aos 83 anos, no hospital Ángeles del Pedregal, na Cidade do México. Um dos últimos remanescentes da geração do “boom” latino-americano, é autor de alguns clássicos da literatura latino-americana contemporânea, como “Aura” e “A Morte de Artemio Cruz”.

Apesar de conhece-lo de outras épocas, por conta de várias entrevistas feitas por telefone, aquela manhã em Guadalajara foi especial por vê-lo pela primeira vez ao vivo. Generoso, a primeira pergunta que me fez foi se meu livro sobre democracia na América Latina, para o qual ele tinha dado um depoimento, tinha saído. Abriu um grande sorriso quando disse que sim. “Livros precisam sair, as ideias precisam voar, isso é que é importante.”
