Elvis Presley está em Buenos Aires

“O Último Elvis”, primeiro filme de Armando Bo, que abriu o último festival de cinema independente de Buenos Aires e esteve na seleção de Sundance, começa como uma comédia banal, mas termina por questionar as ilusões mais comuns de todos nós.

Carlos Gutierrez (John Mc Inerny) é um operário de uma fábrica da periferia de Buenos Aires. Gordo, mal-cuidado, sem muitos recursos, separado e pai de uma filha com quem tem dificuldades de se relacionar, parece levar uma vida medíocre. Se não fosse por um grande sonho, uma realidade paralela onde é feliz.

À noite, penteia as costeletas, veste um macacão branco com detalhes dourados e canta lindamente o repertório de Elvis Presley. Sim, Gutierrez é um “cover”, talvez o melhor do ídolo de Memphis surgido no Cone Sul. Se apresenta em bingos, cassinos, festas de clubes e até em asilos para idosos. Seu Elvis não é o Elvis galã do começo da carreira e dos filmes de aventura. Mas sim o Elvis gordo, destruído pelos vícios. O Elvis do fim da vida, mas que canta como nunca.

Aos poucos, porém, a graça inicial vai desaparecendo e o drama se impõe. A ex-mulher sofre um acidente e ele tem de cuidar da filha, cujo nome, não por acaso, é Lisa Marie.

A menina o acompanha em seu estranho dia a dia. Tem de comer sanduíches de pasta de amendoim com banana, como fazia o ídolo, ou passar horas na frente da televisão vendo a única coisa que o pai tem em casa: gravações de suas apresentações históricas. Também o acompanha nos shows em clubes suburbanos.

Aos poucos, Lisa Marie o força a olhar para seu próprio delírio, ao mesmo tempo em que se identifica com o que há de infantil e romântico no comportamento do pai.

Armando Bo, neto de um diretor famoso, é também roteirista de “Biutiful”, de Alejandro González Iñarritú (“Amores Perros”). Em “O Último Elvis” oferece um retrato vívido e colorido de uma ilusão, ambientado num subúrbio que surge decadente e charmoso.

Depois do sucesso no festival portenho, “O Último Elvis” está agora em cartaz no circuito comercial do país. As filas para vê-lo ganham das da nova versão de “Titanic” e outros blockbusters.

Esta é a Argentina, do bom cinema nacional com excelente público e que, apesar de local, faz perguntas essenciais e internacionais.
