Enquanto os argentinos invadiram as ilhas na tentativa de recuperá-las dos ingleses, que os haviam expulsado em 1833, os chilenos apoiavam a Inglaterra. Governado pelo ditador Augusto Pinochet, o Chile foi um aliado importante do governo britânico de Margaret Thatcher, fornecendo ajuda e logística.

Por essas e outras, as imagens de hoje, de Cristina Kirchner aos abraços e sorrisos ao lado de Sebastián Piñera, em Santiago, provocaram uma certa desconfiança nos argentinos. Se oficialmente o governo do país andino diz hoje apoiar a reivindicação argentina pela soberania das ilhas, por outro, os mais de 200 chilenos que vivem lá fazem protestos para que continuem a pertencer ao Reino Unido.
